My name is Marcel Borgstijn. I am an enthusiastic documentary photographer from The Netherlands who prefers to work on long-term photo projects. In recent years I have followed several mentorships and the last 4 years an annual Masterclass Storytelling.
Like many of you, I’m also struggling with my photo projects. Do I have the right approach? How do I imagine what I have in mind? Questions. Questions.
There are many sites on the internet where you can enjoy the most beautiful photo series, the most moving stories, the best social documentaries. In most cases you’ll find a word from the creator with the background of the project, sometimes even the challenges the photographer faced. But rarely is it about the process. And that’s what I’m looking for!
What do you do when you can’t find what you need? Then you create it yourself.
That’s why I started Documenstory. An attempt to gain more insight into the process of making a documentary photo series in which storytelling plays an important role. And where can you find better information than the people with the same problems? That’s why I first asked my photo friends how they start a new project. Questions about where they get their inspiration from. Whether they are working with a preconceived plan or whether the project is forming along the way.
